Era Trieste è un omaggio alla Trieste del recente passato – precisamente la città degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta del secolo scorso – che unisce l’amore per i paesaggi urbani all’interesse per il design vintage, la storia contemporanea e la fantascienza. Dirigibili incombenti, luccicanti aerei, enormi piroscafi, auto dalle linee retrò e misteriosi personaggi da noir hollywoodiano si muovono in una città in preda ad un mirabolante capitalismo yugo-americano. Insegne al neon, pubblicità invadenti riempiono le strade di una Trieste iper-colorata, pop, deliziosamente incongruente, come il Maresciallo Tito che fa da testimonial alla Coca Cola o la gigantesca scritta propagandistica in perfetto stile Hollywood sul Carso. L’ucronia (filone della fantascienza che si diverte a riscrivere la storia in modo alternativo e sorprendente) ha contagiato tutte le vivaci vedute della città, restituendo allo spettatore fuggevoli immagini da un passato improbabile.
Era Trieste scava nella storia della città, nutrendosi di centinaia di testimonianze fotografiche per poi riproporle distorte quanto basta a ricreare un mondo di fantasia, alternativo e un po’ provocatorio. Perché questa storia distorta a ben vedere non è molto diversa dalle innumerevoli storie che le diverse anime della città si tramandano da anni, storie piene di miti, mistificazioni e rimozioni.
Dunque questo progetto è un invito a trovare una narrazione condivisa, pacificatrice, limpida del recente passato cittadino, che faccia piazza pulita dall’uso propagandistico e deformato della storia.

Era Trieste is a tribute to the Trieste of the recent past—specifically, the city of the 1950s and 1960s—combining a love of urban landscapes with an interest in vintage design, contemporary history, and science fiction. Looming airships, gleaming planes, enormous steamships, retro-style cars, and mysterious Hollywood noir characters move through a city gripped by a dazzling Yugoslavian-American capitalism. Neon signs and invasive advertisements fill the streets of a hyper-colorful, pop-culture, and delightfully incongruous Trieste, like Marshal Tito as a spokesperson for Coca-Cola or the gigantic Hollywood-style propaganda sign on the Karst plateau. Uchronia (a branch of science fiction that delights in rewriting history in alternative and surprising ways) has infected all the city’s vibrant views, offering the viewer fleeting images from an unlikely past.
Era Trieste delves into the city’s history, drawing on hundreds of photographic testimonies and then reproposing them, distorted just enough to recreate a fantasy world, alternative and slightly provocative. Because this distorted history, upon closer inspection, is not very different from the countless stories that the city’s various souls have passed down for years—stories rife with myths, mystifications, and repressions.
This project is therefore an invitation to find a shared, peaceful, and clear narrative of the city’s recent past, one that clears the way for propagandistic and distorted use of history.
