Nestory

Joyce in cocci

Joyce in Shards
Stephen Dedalus, the young Joyce’s alter ego, is the protagonist of the second episode of Ulysses (Nestor). A struggling, restless, and disillusioned schoolteacher, he reflects on the meaning of history and the manipulations of power, while his thoughts move freely between philosophy, memory, irony, and everyday life. Joyce’s writing, layered and extraordinarily dense, resists any immediate translation into images: within its pages coexist learned quotations and popular songs, metaphysical reflections and sharp wit, high and low registers woven together without interruption. These pictures arise from an attempt to visually convey such complexity. Inspired by Greek vase painting, they blend different eras and artistic languages: anachronistic painting, pop art, and conceptual art coexist in scenes where the ancient world meets the present, while original fragments of Joyce’s text are integrated into the images as a living part of the narrative. In the dialogue between word and image, the episode takes shape as a sequence of ironic and disorienting snapshots, in which Ulysses continues to question both our time and our way of seeing.
